Why is the fox so eager to be tamed by the little prince? If he already knows how to tame himself, why does he need someone else to do it for him?

He cannot tame himself as he may only tame himself and only do what HE himself thinks is good, like steal chickens. He might want a friend, or someone to confide secrets to.

  2.   Simon Says:

You can’t tame yourself. He must be tamed so he can do what other people think is good of him, not just what he thinks is good. The fox may see that the little prince is not like most men, who are busy with ‘matters of consequence’, but on a deep and reflective journey to travel and see the world, and to find out about grown-ups.

  3.   The D Man Says:

I think the fox wants the little prince to tame him because one can not simply tame itself because as the fox says once one has been tamed by someone it is theirs and he already owns himself and he can not tame himself because as it goes in the book the little prince needs to come back every day and he can not do so if there is no one there apart from the hunters.

I think the fox wants to be unique from others and that he really wants to have a friend. He wants to talk and share stuff with someone, he finds it may be fun to have someone to play with too. He also wants to be protected from the hunters and have backup. He actually can’t tame himself too.
